[TrickTreat] Oatmeal Jack's Coin Heist
On an otherwise dark & quiet corner the night before the Reaper’s Revelry was set to kick off, a sleepy little shop experienced a rude awakening as the door banged off its hinges and a furry green shape barrelled out into the night. The shopkeep chased after only a few steps behind, yelling ‘STOP! THIEF!’ but was unable to keep up, and finally gave up, huffing and puffing as they watched the scoundrel abscond with a bag full of ill-gotten gains. They stared with bewilderment as the cloaked figure disappeared into the night, and wondered aloud, "Who in the world would rob a candy shop tonight of all nights? They can get all the sweets they can stomach tomorrow for free..."
The thief skittered down alleyways and around corners, narrowly dodging the few people out and about so late at night. He clambered up a wall, dropped into a pile of refuse, got his claws caught on a bag and tripped, and went hurtling like an emerald whirlwind end over end down the alley til he slammed into the far wall, and laid still for a moment, groaning softly. When the pain had subsided he picked himself up and dusted himself off, then hurriedly inspected his bag to make sure none of his spoils had spilled out. Miraculously, his bag was intact and remained clasped closed. He paused to savor the moment of victorious escape and reverently undid the clasp to gaze at the contents within.
Jack Of-All-Trade’s dark, greedy eyes drank in the light glimmering off of a bag full of dozens of gleaming golden coins. Normally a bag of gold this big would weigh a hell of a lot more, but this was easily manageable. He’d really hit it big! Gorgeous, lightweight, and quiet - rather than the usual clink and clank of coinage, these beauties made remarkably dull, soft noises as they shifted, shunted about by the bag’s movement. Jack stuck a clawed paw in and sifted through, letting them spill between his fingers, and finally snagged a single coin and lifted it high to catch the candlelight. He tilted his head to the side, lost in the beauty of it, turning it this way and that to watch the light dance… and stopped, frowning. There was a sliver of silver amongst the gleaming gold. On the edge of the coin, something like a seam had been folded over, exposing a greyish metallic sheen and something darker beneath. Jack picked at it with a claw and found that the gold exterior easily tore away, exposing a soft brown interior, pressed with the same crest on each side. He stared dumbfounded at the dull disc in his hand, stripped completely of its glamor - little more than a thin sheet of tin, easily crinkled and torn. Jack raised it to his mouth and took a hesitant bite.
Chocolate.
The coins were worthless. Foiled again.
