Though the 2024 Reapers' Revelry: Tricks and Treats event has ended, users who submitted an event-compliant Misc. Prompt DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER and have not yet redeemed their Tricks and Treats Prompt rewards have until November 30th to do so. Rewards are not automatically gained upon acceptance into the Gallery, so make sure to complete the associated Prompt if you haven't done so already!

2024 COSMIC COOK-OFF

Renowned Universe-wide for her expertise and knowledge in cuisine from all over the cosmos, Five-star(lyng) culinarian and gourmet Brioche is back to judge yet another Cosmic Cook-Off!

While food is inessential to a Starlyng's survival, learning and tasting local recipes not only delights the senses, but also provides an excellent opportunity for Starlyngs to learn about the inhabitants and food sources of the planets they are observing. Thus, Brioche is interested in your Starlyng's findings, alongside seeking novel dishes to taste-test and view.

In this contest, Cheflyngs should aim to use their skills and ingredients local to the planet they are on to create fun dishes, with both grand and participation prizes offered for their efforts.

🍲 COSMIC COOK-OFF END DATE: November 29, 2024. 🍲

COSMIC COOK-OFF REQUIREMENTS:

• ART: Must have a simple background, clean coloring, shading, and be a bust at minimum. Submissions should be no bigger than 2000x2000px and 72 dpi.

• WRITING: Must have at least 800 words and be proofread.

• Piece must clearly picture OR describe the creation process AND appearance of a plausible in-Universe dish.

• A detailed drawing or description of your dish can be replaced with a photograph of the dish that you created in real life. This can be made of edible ingredients, or synthetic materials like clay or felt.
  
  
• While multiple submissions can be made to the Gallery, only one is eligible for a grand or participation prize. Please make sure to submit this piece to the Cosmic Cook-Off Prompt!

FESTIVE PROMPT: REAPERS' REVELRY

Due to the Universe-wide prevalence of Reapers, festivities for the Reapers' Revelry seek to imitate the collection of Stardust through the exchange of candy. Additionally, Starlyngs celebrating this event often choose to dress up in a myriad of costumes, and use it as a chance to reminisce of what is important to them. It is a celebration of the memories that make up each and every Starlyng, and is a reminder that they will live on even after an individual's death.

The Reapers' Revelry is typically celebrated during the month of October in reference to the founding Reaper and Firstborn, Grimshaw, who is commonly associated with the number eight.

Depict or write about Starlyngs enjoying some Halloween-adjacent festivities via costuming and collecting candy.

Can be applied to any of your Misc. Prompts during October for a x1.2 bonus.

Our Server Boost Rewards have been changed from 2 Vermyl to 25 Stardust, 25 Sylver, and 2 Vermyl!

Discord users can boost our server and fill out the Server Boost Reward Claim Prompt to obtain said rewards. This Prompt may be submitted up to twice per month, and must be done so in order to receive anything.

Stardust can be spent at the Stardust Shop, Sylver can be spent at the Sylver Lining, and Vermyl can be spent at the Vermyillion Pavillion.

With October now upon us, we've officially entered the fourth quarter of our Guest Artist year. Ergo, it's time for yet another round of Guest Artist applications!

To reiterate our FAQ summary about Guest Artists: "Guest Artists (GA) are permitted to make official adopts, customs, and designs for the species as desired for a three month term. Openings for Guest Artist applications occur every three months for one week in our newsletters."

EVENT: STARNIVAL 2024 (ART FIGHT-BASED EVENT)

The Legerdemain is coming around to our part of the Universe, and the Cirque du Cosmos is ready to throw the Art Fight party into full swing! With a whole entourage of encouragement, the Starnival is set up so that your participation will win you prizes based on your Art Fight performance. Userlyngs will first join one of two teams on Starlyng.space - Team Seafoam or Team Stardust, submit their Art Fight pieces to the Starnival Gallery to earn Renown (RN), and get a variety of prizes at the end of the event based on their total Renown! The winning team on-site will have a Starlyng themed after that team raffled out to all participants after the end of the event. Pretty cool, I must say. 

As for guidelines? Here's the gist:

• This event is collaborative, not competitive, and is designed to simply accompany the yearly off-site Art Fight event. Team selections and differences in Renown earned by each team will only impact what theme the Starlyng raffled at the end of the event will have. Please make sure your team selection is consistent with your team on Art Fight!
  
  
• Attacks will only earn you Renown if a Starlyng, Oort, or Boötes is present - attacks containing unrelated species as well are permissible, but points will only be calculated based on the present Starlyngs, Oort, or Boötes. Please calculate your Renown as if the piece contains only Starlyng(s) or affiliated species.
  
  
• All attacks will earn you Renown when submitted to the Starnival Gallery, even if submitted to Art Fight before this announcement's release. Any attack's point total with a decimal will be rounded up, and that number will be the total Renown you earn for your submission. Please be sure to include a Criteria Reward (located at the bottom of the submission form within the Gallery) and list Renown equivalent to your gained points. For your submission to be approved, you must link the Art Fight attack in your submission!
  
  
• Switching teams will reset your Renown total, due to complications with our Faction extension. If you wish to retain your Renown, you are advised to refrain from team switching. We are not responsible for compensating lost Renown.
  
  
• Friendly fire point totals will remain equivalent to their reduced amounts on Art Fight.
  
  
• Rewards will be granted based on the amount of Renown you have accumulated, and all earned rewards are cumulative (i.e., all rewards below the tier you have achieved by the end of the event will also be granted). There will also be Account-Bound collective rewards based on the total amount of points obtained by both teams, which can be earned by anyone who has participated at least once. Rewards will not be granted until the very end of the Starnival, on August 8th.
  
  
  • Individual rewards are freely tradable and include:

Those in our official Discord Server are likely aware of Traitacular Thursdays, which are our weekly Trait raffle. Going forward,  we will be changing the format so that they will be held only on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month, with two of a select Legendary Trait Item raffled out on the second Thursday, and one Mythical Trait being raffled out on the fourth.

We are excited to finally release the Neutron Starlyng [M] Trait, which has a reference created by the very talented Karmnotic! The Trait describes "A ghostly, undead Starlyng. Guest Artist applications for the term of July 8th through October 8th are now open! To reiterate our FAQ summary about Guest Artists (Moonlet Rank on Lorekeeper): "Guest Artists (GA) are permitted to make official adopts, customs, and designs for the species as desired for a three month term. Openings for Guest Artist applications occur every three months for one week in our newsletters."

Interested? Then head on over to our Guest Artist Applications! There are some standards to be met that the form will bring up, and all further rules will be explained to users upon being selected! This application period will last from July 2st to July 8th at 11:59 PST, with new Guest Artists being announced on July 9th! (Candidates are deliberated and voted on by the Stafflyngs.

TO USERS WHO HAVE APPLIED IN THE PAST: We wipe applications after every term, so if you've applied to be a Guest Artist before and are still interested in the position, please apply again! We have also now added the option to retain your application for one extra term to reduce the number of times you need to apply, so please check that if desired!

There will be no event in August, and activity will likely be slow beyond approvals and general upkeep. We are planning on returning with our 1 year anniversary event in September, so keep your eyes peeled for more news in the following months!

As for moderation news, redcrowz' role has been converted to Lorekeeper Manager and remains the main authority on keeping our Lorekeeper running. Subsequently, our former Lorekeeper Assistants, luparoca and felwinter, have been reassigned to the role of Moderator.

We're also opening Moderator Applications again! The application form will detail the role requirements and expectations, and, as always, you must be 18+ to apply. We look forward to seeing your submission! While we do not guarantee we will take on new Moderators, we are interested in seeing qualified applicants.

There's a new Pride Month-themed Festive Prompt Bonus in town, and it's ready for you to make a show of it for a x1.2 Stardust bonus on your Misc. Art and Writing Prompts throughout the month of June!

Like usual, Festive Prompts remain inactive outside of their designated months.

We have also expanded our Field Research Prompt so that Userlyngs may now contribute unique fauna to our ever-expanding Universe! Similar to the Flora Field Research Prompt,  the Fauna Field Research Prompt asks Userlyngs to depict an original or preexisting fauna, alongside a short written description of them. This specific Prompt awards 150 Stardust and 50 Sylver for your efforts, so we hope to see your Starlyngs' findings soon! Now that the Fashion Frenzy 2024 has come to a close, we would like to announce our winners! We had so many stylish submissions that it hard to pick which we wanted to exclusively incorporate into our official gearsets, and as such, we decided to expand our criteria for each tier! 

• TIER 2 PRIZE: Tier 2 winners will receive a Rare MYO and their choice of any one Legendary Trait. Their ideas will be used as minor inspiration for our gearsets.

Secret Starlyng Summer 2024: Partners Assigned, Dates to Remember

Secret Starlyng Summer 2024 applications have now closed. Applicants will be matched with their partners and contacted by the end of the day via Discord, so please stay alert and mind your inbox! All instructions can be found in your conversation with our shared staff account hentopan (ouroboros), as well as our #event-rules channel in the Starlyng Discord Server. To reiterate, the most important dates applicants need to remember are: 

• Soft Deadline on June 19th: Either ask for a backup artist by this date OR have a work in progress ready to show our staff account (if not already finished with your piece!)

For further clarity, the descriptions of Mutated [R] and Neutron Starlyng [M] have been updated:

• Mutated [R] now clarifies that all Mutated growths, such as bones and organs, are not inherent to a Starlyng's physical form or internal anatomy.
  
  
• Similarly, Neutron Starlyng [M] clarifies that the bones in the reference are there for reference's sake; Neutron Starlyngs [M] have a ghostly vessel. Bones and other non-inherent internality to a Starlyng requires Mutated [R], and to see the Starlyng's core requires Starspots [EA].

We must sadly announce the departure of our Modlyng palm, who has been with us since launch. We will greatly miss Palm's presence, and we hope you'll wish him well in her future endeavors.

Additionally, we wanted to give an advance notice of our upcoming unthemed Summer Gacha, which will be happening in July. As always, rolls will be $40, with each design in the pool being a chibi Starlyng. Stay tuned for more details as July draws near!

Back to the harrowing struggles of logistics: Factions are being delayed again, with a more clear projected release date of August. Luckily, as it is summer, we will have a lot more free time to work on the writing and make it the best it can be. We are deeply sorry. That said: we're always open to some help!

As stated last month: we're working on the remaining Covenant Gearsets, NPC references, and updating the website to support an extension that'd allow for equipping Gear. We are direly in need of someone to help us with the writing aspect of these questlines; if you have the requisite skills, please submit a Permanent Resource Application and save us!

Hello Partylyngs, welcome to Secret Starlyng Part 2: Electric Boogaloo. Those of you here with us since last year may remember the Secret Starlyng December 2023 design exchange, where users were able to flex their design skills for a randomly assigned partner. However, this version of Secret Starlyng will instead involve secretly creating a piece of Starlyng artwork for another user. Star-twork? I'll be here all week. [The audience boos.] Either way, applications for Summer Secret Starlyng 2024 are now open!

Be sure to fully read the instructions and information written in the Google Form linked below if you are interested in this art exchange. The form will remain open until May 31st, and users will be contacted by the official Stafflyng account hentopan (ouroboros) on June 1st. At minimum, a sketch must be finished by June 19th, and the final piece must be submitted by June 22nd. All artwork will be distributed on June 30th.

...This month, the cosmopolitan couturier Yvin is hosting a fashion contest for designers across the stars! Join in the 2024 Fashion Frenzy and show off your literal cutting-edge skills to win prizes and glory! Beware, though: in this tailor-made tournament, there are no lifelines, only clotheslines!

Interested? Then let me share this year's premise: designing Gearsets for (visible) Guilds and Troupes. This means brushing up on their information, and being mindful of it during your creation process. Furthermore, several guidelines must be adhered to, which are detailed in the next section. Of course, you're very welcome to consult the experts in our Discord server's #event-chat!

The 2024 Fashion Frenzy will last from May 1, 2024 to May 29, 2024, with winners being announced in June's newsletter! Don't be fashionably late, now!

FASHION FRENZY GUIDELINES: 

• Contestants are to design a three-piece Gearset for any of the (visible) Guilds and Troupes. This means none of the Covenants and neither the Archivists' Association nor the Symphony of the Stars (the latter two lack descriptions). 
  

THE FOLLOWING GUILDS CAN BE DESIGNED FOR:

THE FOLLOWING TROUPES CAN BE DESIGNED FOR:

• Gearsets are to distinctly reflect their respective Faction's lore. Contestants may seek further counsel or insight via the Discord server #event-chat. 
  
  
• Each reference must include three discrete pieces of Gear and be made using our mannequin base. Gearset pieces do not necessarily need to follow the example provided below and can involve things like gloves and boots as one their own pieces. A "discrete piece" just need to be substantial enough to warrant obtaining as Gear. 
  
  
• The mannequin base may be relined to fit the artist's style better or used as-is. Ears, horns, tails, and feathers can be added to the mannequin and the coloring on the mannequin itself should remain one flat color.
  
  
• Each piece of Gear must be on a separate layer, lined, and colored. Please make sure to arrange your references on the canvas like the example provided below.
  
  
• Submit your Gearset to the Fashion Frenzy Gallery. Submissions should be no bigger than 2000x2000px and 72 dpi. (The original canvas size can be anything; it just needs to be resized for the Gallery.)
  
  
• When submitting your piece to the Fashion Frenzy Gallery, you may also submit the Fashion Frenzy Prompt for 250 Stardust. (You may submit your Gallery piece and the Prompt same time; you just need the Gallery link for the Prompt.) You can do this per completed Gearset. Please link to your Gallery submission in the "Submission URL" field when filling out the Prompt. 
  
  
• All designs may be used in some way for Gearsets on our website, either directly or referenced in official materials. By submitting your designs to the Fashion Frenzy Gallery, you will be consenting to their usage in this manner.
  
  
• Please maintain a .PSD file of your Gearset(s) in the event that we do officially add them to our roster! We'll be contacting you for it.
  
  
• Contestants can design and submit as many Gearsets as they please, so long as they abide the rules. Prizes can likewise be won more than once, from within and across tiers!

There are many cogs in the not-so-well-oiled Faction machine, and it's especially tough to align them all around this time of year. Optimistically-speaking, the (still tentative) projected release for everthing is now June. We deeply apologize.

SCAVENGER HUNT, NEW TIME-LIMITED TRAIT

Long have tales been told of an elusive, Unknown beast prowling the sylvan settings of Tellus. Light years away, an eerily similar enigma is fabled to roam the Glasislundr of Hyperborea, the Glass Forest of Tartarus, and the woodlands of Arcadia. Despite countless sightings, none of these planets have ever backed up the existence of said beast with definitive evidence--until now, that is. 

Yes, you heard right: we've discovered undeniable, osteal proof that Bigfoot exists! We! have! dug! up! bones!

For whatever reason, the Bigfoot leaves behind perfectly preserved digits, and these digits are the same for each pair of its hands and feet. As we've never found the rest of its skeleton, the prevailing theory is that the Bigfoot is both long-lived (if not immortal?!) and capable of shedding its fingoes (finger-toes) as needed. A bit digusting, but nevertheless fascinating.

That being said, although we know how to find its wigglers, we still need your help gathering them! "And how will I do that," you ask? Why, with our patent-pending, specially-developed, Scavenger Hunter, of course! It works rather like a metal detector (if a metal detector was designed to discover Bigfoot parts) and operates by... well, giving hints. Don't ask me why. The thing has a 100% success rate so long as you can solve its brainteasers, alright?

Once you've collected a full hoot (hand-foot), you may craft a Bigfoot's Hoot Plaster Cast (Account-Bound) of your assemblage. Other Volunteerlyngs have found inspiration through it in the form of the Digits [L] Trait. This Trait allows for the application of one set of hominoid hands/feet OR for the halix (back toe) of an otherwise standard anisodactyl Starlyng to be positioned like a thumb. 

We'll only be running this event for the length of April, and all participants can only gain one Bigfoot's Hoot Plaster Cast. In other words, the Digits [L] Trait may only be applied once and cannot be attained after the month ends. So, if you're interested in this once-in-a-lifetime Trait, you'd better get to digging!

SCAVENGER HUNT GUIDELINES: 

• The location of each Bigfoot fingoe can be found by following a given hint. The first hint can either be read in the section below, or on the Scavenger Hunt page itself.
  
  
• Each hint will direct users to a World Expanded page location on our site. Explore our site to find the hinted page!
  
  
• Upon locating the correct page, an image of the fingoe will be present. Click on the image to collect it.

UNIVERSE EXPANSION: NEW TRAITS + REFS, UPDATED DESCRIPTIONS

Two new Traits have been released from prison: Reptilian [R] and Digits [L]! Both Traits apply to the body. Be sure to check them out by clicking said links or the images below!

Reptilian [R] allows for the addition of a forked tongue, heat pits, reptilian scales, shells, or plating, neck frills or hoods, and/or other reptilian features. For piscine scales, you would use the Aquatic [R] Trait instead. Since we gave Reptilian [R] the forked tongue attribute, it has thus been removed from Devilish [R] and its artwork and description have been updated! (Be sure to applaud NYAHILISM for the ravishing Reptilian Trait reference, and solaria for the dashing Devilish Trait glossectomy!)

We went through and recategorized Starlyngs with visible forked tongues and no other Devilish [R] Traits as Reptilian [R]. However, if you feel that was in error, we missed your Starlyng, or that your ALREADY Devilish Starlyng has a forked tongue that simply isn't visible on Masterlist, then feel free to submit a redesign request and we'll get that squared away!

Please note that unless we have proof that a non-Devilish Starlyng has a forked tongue, we will not be grandfathering this Trait in for free. In other words, your Starlyng would have had to already been marked as Devilish before this update (and should have been, if they have a forked tongue). Ergo, if you want to add Reptilian [R] to a Starlyng, you would follow the usual redesign process (with the Rare Trait Items add-on only being required if your Starlyng's Rarity is Common or Uncommon).   

Likewise, in now distinguishing reptilian scales from piscine ones, if you feel that your Aquatic Starlyng's scales are more Reptilian than Aquatic, then do submit a redesign request and we'll also get that squared away! 

Digits [L] was already mentioned back in the Scavenger Hunt section, but here's its description again for those just popping in (hey, read the whole newsletter, why don't'cha?): Digits [L] allows for the application of one set of hominoid hands/feet OR for the halix (back toe) of an otherwise standard anisodactyl Starlyng to be positioned like a thumb.

REMEMBER: DIGITS [L] IS A SINGLE-USE, TIME-LIMITED TRAIT. It'll be gone once May mayhap-pens! (See "Scavenger Hunt + New Time-Limited Trait" for more information.)

Last but not least, we also entreated the splendiferous solaria for an additional Droop [C] Trait reference! Hopefully it'll help!

PRICE AND COMMON MYO CHANGES

As mentioned last month, the following changes to our economy (in an effort to boost ARPG engagement) will now be taking effect: 

• UNCOMMON TRAIT: 10 SD ➤ 25 SD
  
  
• RARE TRAIT: 50 SD ➤ 75 SD
  
  
• MONTHLY FREE COMMON MYOS: 2 per month ➤ 1 per month
  
  
  • COMMON MYOS will be added to the Stardust Shop for 50 SD
    
    
• UNCOMMON MYOS: 100 SD ➤ 150 SD

By the way, there's still time for you to send me your Stardust. You won't get anything, but it's clearly the superior option.

ASTRAL ARTISTRY: guest artist applications open, new official artists

Time flies, and another three months are gone just like that! This brings us into the second quarter of our Guest Artist year--with this rotation lasting from April 8th to July 8th--and our next round of Guest Artist applications!

To reiterate our FAQ summary about Guest Artists (Moonlet Rank on Lorekeeper): "Guest Artists (GA) are permitted to make official adopts, customs, and designs for the species as desired for a three month term. Openings for Guest Artist applications occur every three months for one week in our newsletters."

Interested? Then head on over to our Guest Artist Applications! There are some standards to be met that the form will bring up, and all further rules will be explained to users upon being selected! This application period will last from April 1st to April 7th at 11:59 PST, with new Guest Artists being announced on April 8th! (Candidates are deliberated and voted on by the Stafflyngs.)

Also, if you aren't chosen this time around, you're more than welcome to apply again during our third quarter (July 8th to October 8th).

TO USERS WHO HAVE APPLIED IN THE PAST: We are now wiping applications after every term, so if you've applied to be a Guest Artist before and are still interested in the position, please apply again!

If you're already part of our Discord server, then you likely already caught wind of these changes. HOWEVER, we're also unveiling an entirely new channel for our Authorlyngs!

• #ANNOUNCEMENTS is now an actual announcements channel! Nothing too drastic in terms of what's changed, but announcement channels can be followed. Upon following this channel, Userlyngs may select an external server and channel to see any updates we choose to publish (separate from just posting). Totally optional!
  
  The Follow button is located beside the channel name! Clicking on it should bring you to a new window where you can choose which external server and channel you'd like to see our published announcements in.

• #ASK-THE-STAFF, #LOREKEEPER-HELP, and #SUGGESTIONS are now forum channels! Aside from being cleaner overall, this'll make it easier to locate previously-asked questions via keyword-searching and tags. Userlyngs can also ask questions in former threads should further clarification be needed! If we find that additional tags or threads are needed, we'll certainly add them!
  
  The #suggestions channel differs slightly in that it has a set number of dedicated threads for certain topics; Userlyngs can suggest things in them (rather than create entirely new threads for each suggestion).
  
  These channels, of course, are meant to pair with our on-site FAQ. Please review each channel's guidelines and pinned threads before using them!
  
  
• #PROOFREADLYNG is a forum channel for writers seeking help with proofreading and editing. It benefits to give every written piece you're thinking about submitting another set of eyes, as it factors into our grading and acceptance!
  
  (While optional, proofreading can net Userlyngs a 1.4x Stardust bonus for Misc. Writing Prompts, so it is especially worth it to give your works a second pass! Everything else submitted to the site [that is, aside from Misc. Prompts] requires proofreading beforehand.)
