Sapient Lifeforms
The Niflheim, (Ice) Giants, or Colossi (Aurora borealis) are the sapient lifeforms that inhabit the Evernight on Hyperborea. They are capable of withstanding sheer temperatures and possess a forminable constitution. As is obvious by their common name, the Niflheim are also colossal in stature; they never stop growing, and so the oldest of their kind are said to have hung the heavens. It is also believed that their deceased formed the impressive mountain ranges that line the Evernight. Smaller species may lose all footing upon their approach and are smarter to avoid them altogether, as Colossi are not endowed with physical senses beyond taste and touch; their sight, smell, and hearing are next to none.
Colossi are beings born of the terrain around them; geologists have been able to track the remains of Giants back to their origins clear across the planet and from entirely different periods of the geologic timescale. (Such efforts amuse the Giants, as they could have simply told the geologists.) Entire ecosystems can grow upon them without any harm to either party, and some Giants may even stop roaming altogether to become new, stationary biomes. The majority of Colossi are "bound together" by a mixture of ordinary ice, amorphous ice, and Anima Sourcery. Colossi arise from the natural and high concentration of Anima present on Hyperborea.
The earth-based Sourcery Giants specialize in is called Eonothem. Giants are also capable of "hearing" the "soul" of the planet and are often found with their ears to the ground; this method is used to warn, leave behind messages, or mark waypoints for their fellows. They are additionally understood to be able to "read the memories" of rocks upon touch, and anything crafted from the earth, such as pottery, can be used to store and express information. Though capable of speech (which they have learned for the Dwarves), Niflheim are more partial to communication via vibrations through the earth. Celebrations amongst Giants can feel like earthquakes!
Unfortunately, the semi-frozen composition of Niflheim means that only the hardiest of their kind can venture into the Everlight. That being said, diplomatic contact is routinely made between the Dwarves and the Giants at the borders between the Light and Dark Sides; many Dwarves have also settled alongside Giants in the East City. They are on friendly terms and share in one anothers' bounties without issue. For the most part, Niflheim are a wise, social, and prominently tranquil species (earning them yet another nickname: the Gentle Giants) with nomadic habits and no apparent power structure. Those that live alongside Dwarves in the East City may take on more Dwarf-like social behavior.
The Giants, Dwarves, and Ember Therion are united against the Fey, although the Giants have not given up in trying to extend them an olive branch.
