Sapient Lifeforms

The Myrkheimr, Niðavellir, or Dwarves (Aurora australis) are a mostly-subterranean species that primarily live within the Pyr-facing side of Hyperborea's equator. However, in being both adaptive to all climes and very pioneering, many Dwarves have come to populate areas of the Everlight and Evernight as well. While short-lived compared to their fellow sapient lifeforms and unable to sense or use Sourcery, Dwarven civilization has nonetheless progressed rapidly. Nowhere is this fact more prevalent than at their underground capital, Hjálm (Helm City or just Helm), and its four aboveground sister cities, Austri (East City), Vestri (West City), Norðri (North City) and Suðri (South City). Dwarves are by far the most numerous among sapient lifeforms on Hyperborea.

As stated, Dwarves cannot be affected by or affect others with Sourcery. However, to them, this was by no means a roadblock; they instead became masters of Allchemy! By marrying their intensive research on Sourcery with their Allchemical knowledge, Dwarves developed a technique called Infusion that lead to the creation of Magitechnology (Magitech). Dwarves that specialize in Infusion are called Runelords, while those that design and optimize Magitechnology are called Runesmiths. Select Dwarves called Incantors are able to vocalize Runic (via singing) to produce lesser Sourcery (namely Anima, which is used to infuse their Magitech with semi-sentience). As Dwarves are in constant need of metals and other such materials, they have a vast procurement network spread across Hyperborea (mining being the most prevalent profession).

Socially-speaking, Dwarven society is not unlike humankind's. Though the majority of Dwarves live within their five cities, there are countless smaller settlements all throughout Hyperborea (more so in the Everlight). The Dwarves of the East City and Evernight have a strong bond with the Giants; it is not uncommon for them to live alongside each other or even develop more intimate relationships. Children born of Giants and Dwarves are only ever a Giant or a Dwarf and never a mixture; how that entire process works will forever remain a mystery (it may involve Eonothem). Overall, while there may be some infighting, Dwarves are far more interested in their own ambitions than in stepping on each others' toes; battles, wars, etc. are few and far between during the modern era.

Physically-speaking, Dwarves are... suspiciously similar to humans. It is thought that their ancestors are the long-gone, humanlike visitors that once settled throughout Mythos; the Dwarves, however, only have an inkling of their existence. Evidence of their predecessors is few and far between on Hyperborea, with the majority of it far below the ever-rising seas. The only marked differences between Dwarves and humans are their shorter (around or below 4'5"/135 cm), wider, and stronger builds, a general lack of sexual dimorphism, and living, on average, about twice as long (~160-200 years).

The Giants, Dwarves, and Ember Therion are united against the Fey. Before Magitechnology, Dwarves suffered a constant assault. However, nowadays, Dwarven defenses have become so formidable that they've begun to hunt Avalon instead; the recent invention of skyskips has forced Avalon away from their cities. With a keen interest in exploring the cosmos, the Dwarves view Avalon as a stepping stone toward reaching the final frontier.
