StarberryAsterbaccata arcadiae

Angiosperms

The berry-of-paradise or Arcadia starberry (Asterbaccata arcadiae, "starberry of Arcadia"), better known as just (common) starberry, is the native starberry of Arcadia and closest relative to the ancestor of all starberries found across Mythos. "Starberry" can refer to its berries or the overall plant/flower itself.

The Humi, ever-so-fond of Asterbaccata, spread and propogated the original specimen across the system, later cultivating or naturally giving rise to several new species. The original starberry (Asterbaccata hominum, "starberry of humans") no longer exists on any planet, although its seeds may be preserved by the Humi—wherever they may be. It is accepted that the first starberry may have been introduced to Arcadia by the Humi altogether, hence its nomenclature.

Like most all other starberries, it is small, flowering plant that curiously retains five of its largest petals even after producing berries. These pearlescent petals frame its vivid red cluster of berries in a star-like formation, inspiring its common name. At night, the petals of starberries emit the pyrlight they absorbed during the day; this phenomenon is known as "starshine".

The taste of starberries can vary, but they are commonly sweet, culinarily versatile, and well-liked on every planet. Of the starberries that don't bear fruit, they are nonethless popular gifts (as notorious as Tellus roses).
