Wishwell StarberryAsterbaccata hyperboreae
Angiosperms
The wishwell starberry or Hyperborea starberry (Asterbaccata hyperboreae, "starberry of Hyperborea") is endemic to the balmiest jungles of the Everlight, with its highest concentrations growing in areas of strong, pyrlight exposure.
The wishwell starberry is iconic for its two large leaves, which appear to "wave at passersby" in the wind, hence its common name ("wishing well"). Its name is sometimes modified to include its characteristic speckles, i.e. speckled wishwell and speckled starberry. Much like all other plants in the starberry family, the five petals framing its berries resemble a star. Its long roots cling to the ground, and its berries are both edible and delicious, albeit lacking in nutritional value and other currently understood benefits. It is, for most fauna that appear to frequent it, a highly favored (if light) snack. Being a newly discovered species, many of this plant's properties are as-yet-unknown.
For all other starberries, the pyrlight absorbed during the day causes their petals to glow at night (a phenomenon inherent to all starberries known as "starshine"). However, since the Everlight does not experience a day-night cycle, the wishwell starberry will only shine when they've absorbed beyond their capacity, resulting in a brief yet beautiful expulsion of pyrlight energy called "starfire". In large enough groups, these expulsions can be dangerous due to the amount of light and heat produced; such events should only be observed from a distance and with proper eyewear.
Centralized, torrential rainfall will almost always succeed a starfire, usually taking care of any fires before they can take hold. Wishwell starberries themselves are immune to fire, which has lead to propositions of their use in making non-flammable items.
Being a cyclical happenstance, Dwarves will often plan for starfire viewings.
