Ouroboros

Mythological Figures

Ouroboros is the creator of every universe and the ancestor of all Starlyngs. Known by countless names, Ouroboros is most often referred to as the Sourcestar or Source; other common epithets include: the Origin or Originator, the Omnicosm, the Hen to Pan (All is One), the Ancestor, the Progenitor, and the Creator. Due to the popularity of "Sourcestar," most other terms related to Ouroboros are prefixed with "Source-".

VIEW EXTENDED DESCRIPTION

Ouroboros is a largely unknowable and indispensable metaphysical being that exists beyond all Cosmic Law; it cannot be intrinsically fathomed, even as a concept. Outside of its immediate successors, the Firstborns, as well the Order of the Origin, the vast majority of Starlyngs are not privy to its greater existence as the Omnicosm. The Firstborns might have the closest understanding of the Creator out of any Starlyng, but even they are bound by its Cosmic Laws--if only loosely. (Consider the Cosmic Laws [and, by extension, the Cosmic Scales] to be the groundwork for each individual universe; everything else is out of Ouroboros's hands.)

Ouroboros is also the Unknown to End All Unknowns. Although some managed to survive, Ouroboros's "inception" (it always "was," and yet it once "wasn't") meant the end of anything that came "before" everything and nothing. It is the direct creation and paradoxical (main, although no longer sole) creator of the Astral Artist. The missing eye of the Beholder belongs to Ouroboros.

APPEARANCE

While Ouroboros does not possess any one form (nor does it occupy in any one location, etc.), and since it is the progenitor of all Starlyngs, it is in possession of all Traits. Classical portrayals of Ouroboros in Order texts and primordial intergalactic ruins involve a circular or lemniscate Draconic Starlyng biting its own tail. In more advanced images, it is depicted with a transparent, sea angel-like body with a visible DNA helix running through it and numerous synapse-like Whiskers trailing off its body. Its striking eyes, which were glimpsed by the founder of the All is One, have been immortalized through the covenant's insignia (although, again, Ouroboros holds no one shape).

The boundary (Sourcering) of Ouroboros is not necessarily visible nor physically tangible. That being said, weakened areas of the Sourcering (Sourcegates) may manifest as a honeycomb-like "shield". Attacks on the Sourcering can cause the energy of this "shield" to ripple into and out of view; breaches resemble fractured glass, as if space itself has shattered. Were Ouroboros actually conscious, it could pluck out anything from anywhere at any time (literally--past or present) in the Universe.

THE HUSK

The consciousness of Ouroboros departed from the Universe not long after its inception. What "consciousness" can be interacted with now is but a Husk of what it was before it left and thus, although omniscient, it is not truly present and thus cannot attain nor discern new information. Think of it like this: You know each and every book that might be written, but you can never know which books were actually written nor exactly how they were written because you are not here to see them.

Ouroboros's immediate offspring, the Firstborns, are much more accurate oracles, as they both share in an amount of its powers and are actually present in the Universe. However, the most this does is reduce the number of "strings" they have to sift through; there is no such thing as a set fate for anything or anyone in the Omnicosm. Firstborns can also directly commune with the Husk (they call it the Echo) anywhere in the Universe. All other Starlyngs are able to ask the Husk one question by undertaking the Quest of the Querent to the Nexus. Lastly, the Husk steadily decays as the Universe itself ages, creating both Oort (also see: Sourcefeathers) and Sourcegates, which are dealt with by the Order of the Origin.

Notably, part of a Reaper's job is to escort the newfound knowledge of a deceased Starlyng to the Husk so that it may be transported to and absorbed by Ouroboros's main consciousness.

THE OMNICOSM

The entirety of Ouroboros and every universe in totality is referred to as the Omnicosm. All the potential that is ever is and will be exists the moment a universe is born (following the rule that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, , only transferred. Quietus is the lone exception); Ouroboros, on the other hand, contains infinite and inexhaustive potential (see: Cosmic Cauldron).

To visualize the Omnicosm, first imagine two adjacent stacks of coasters (this is a Universe Pair; all universes have at least one parallel universe):

Then, around each stack of coasters, the length of Ouroboros is wrapped around them in a lemniscate (∞) shape:

The left side of the coasters is the "positive" stack of universes (ex. A+), whereas the right stack of coasters is the "negative" (ex. A-) stack of coasters. This can also be thought of as slicing several coins in half, as the left stack is more commonly referred to as the "Head" Universe and the right, the "Tail" Universe, due to the placement of Ouroboros's mouth and tail (see: Sourcecore):

These stacks then repeat infinitely in every direction like an unending chain, for there is no true beginning nor end to Ouroboros. Thus, there are endless alternate dimensions and parallel universes:

For simplicity, Starlyngs are located the Head Universe. Knowledge of the Omnicosm is generally not known by the common Starlyng; Ouroboros itself is known, just not the extent to which is exists. The upper echelons of the Order of the Origin and Firstborns deal with matters involving Ouroboros's body (see: The Husk; Nexus; Sourcegate; Sourcering).
