Reapers
Mythological Figures ・ Part of Way of the Darkscythe
While the energy of deceased Starlyngs is naturally recycled as per the Law, there are instances in which their remains are visited by Reapers. These Starlyngs are born with the ability to sense and cherrypick information from the memories contained within Stardust, fragments of which they've dubbed Pages. When enough Pages have been collected, Reapers will then submit them to the Limitless Library that is Ouroboros's metaphysical archives, which then travel to and eventuate in Ouroboros's main consciousness. These assemblages of fragments are known as Omnibi.
Once a Starlyng's "soul" is "reaped," Reapers can choose to usher a Starlyng's remains toward reincarnation (similar to a psychopomp). Some Stardust is specially gathered and reformed so as to cultivate unique memory fragments—or, more accurately, to increase their chances of happenstance, as nothing in any universe is bound by any one fate. It is far more common, however, that the deceased Starlyngs a Reaper visits had nothing to do with them from start to finish. This "directive" is inherent to their abilities as a Reaper and correlates to the imprint Ouroboros left behind on the Universe. Much like the Starlyngs it bore, Ouroboros is infinitely interested in the cumulation of knowledge.
When a Starlyng is born with the "call to action" (Death's Knell), it does not mean that they are compelled to become a Reaper; it is far from all-consuming and more so a "suggestion". Many Starlyngs with the capacity do not go onto to become Reapers, but those that do often receive the tutelage of an elder Reaper. The vast majority of Reapers belong to the Way of the Darkscythe, where they may hone and specialize their skills. The Way of the Darkscythe was founded by a Firstborn, the Eighth, who still co-heads the Universal Covenant as something of a "ghost" (Neutron Starlyng).
It is also worth noting that not all Reapers possess the same powers, nor the same level of power, or even any power at all—that is, Starlyngs can become Reapers without ever once hearing the Death's Knell, and any Starlyng can be trained in the Way. Likewise, some Starlyngs are better suited to foreseeing and tracking cessation over others. These Reapers, known as Death's Knell (or Trackers) by their covenant, often partner with the Preservation to curtail temporally anomalous deaths.
The first Reapers in the Universe were the Firstborns, and as such, those that remain can, to varying degrees, fulfill the role. Not all of them actively act as Reapers and some are more adept than others—the Eighth being most notable for her mastery. Another notable instance is the First, noted for her close relationship with the Eighth and who had furthered her abilities to be nearly on par. That being said, the First enjoys an eternal flight of fancy and rarely takes on pupils; to be taught by any Firstborn is a high honor indeed.
